About G4G LA Supports the US Forest Service at the San Gabriel Nature Center

The Angeles National Forest has two "Ed Centers" that host about 10,000 students per year to study environmental science, natural history, wildlife, forest health and wildfire behavior & prevention. The program, operated on two campuses, is run by one half-time volunteer staff member and a large cadre of as-needed volunteer teachers, hosts and guides.
Gay For Good will be working on the main campus, the San Gabriel Canyon Education Center, a two-acre compound in the middle of the forest. It offers a large indoor classroom (in a converted fire station), an outdoor learning center, the forest's Volunteer Headquarters (in a large historic cabin), a number of nature trails, and several small cabins/sheds that serve as a hub for admin and storage for our other local forest volunteer programs (trail builders, foot patrol, tree planting, etc). There is also a large nursery on-site in which the Forest Service is growing thousands of young pine trees for planting around the local mountains.

Such a large campus needs lots of love, and G4G's help with annual maintenance is a lifeline. The classroom and offices need a good wipe-down; the Volunteer House needs attention, including cleanup, interior work, minor repairs; the grounds need hazard reduction (raking and pruning); and the trails always could use minor clearance and repair.

Plan on getting dirty while making this place sparkle. Bring water, and snacks – watch the weather on what to wear.

It will be a great day to be outdoors in the mountain air, helping out a gay ranger (Ranger Chris), and sprucing up this educational facility used by many people in our community.

DIRECTIONS:
From LA take either the 10 East to I-605 North to the 210 (or 134 to the 210) to Highway 39 (aka – Azusa Ave). Go north on Hwy 39 and take that about 12 miles to the Education Center (on your left). Look for event parking sign. The entrance is directly across the road from Rincon Fire Station.
