Sea Turtle Monitoring in Los Cabos, Mexico

Help EPI alumni monitor and protect vulnerable sea turtles.

A fundraising campaign for Ecology Project International

The Need:

Sea turtles that nest on the beaches of Los Cabos, Mexico face many threats, including loss of nesting and feeding sites due to coastal development, entanglement in fishing gear, and human consumption of their eggs and meat. As a result, six of the seven species of sea turtles are threatened or endangered.

The Solution:

Students on field science courses with Ecology Project International (EPI) participate in sea turtle monitoring events in collaboration with ASUPMATOMA (La Asociación Sudcaliforniana de Protección al Medio Ambienta y la Tortuga Marina, A.C.). In a unique cross-cultural collaboration, students from the U.S. and  Mexico join these turtle monitoring activities as part of EPI's integral, hands-on courses.

During these monitoring trips, students collect important data and release sea turtle hatchlings into the ocean to help them avoid predation in their journey from nest to sea. These first-hand encounters with vulnerable sea turtles that also call Mexico home help connect students to the global world of conservation and the positive impact they can make as individuals. As a result, they become both global citizens and life-long stewards of their local ecosystems.

As part of EPI's Mexico Eco-Club, Mexican alumni, inspired on their courses to continue these monitoring trips together, create a lasting ethic of protecting the local habitats that sea turtles depend upon for their continued survival. And the ripple effect doesn't end there - they also continue to inspire their Mexican peers and the U.S. students who visit during their EPI courses.

You can help!

It's easy to make a big impact by helping to sponsor a sea turtle monitoring event. Will you help send EPI alumni on a sea turtle monitoring trip by making a contribution today?

EPI is a nonprofit.

That means we rely on the generosity of our donors, including students, parents, and other supporters, to help make EPI's field science courses possible for local Mexican students. These local students often do not have the capacity to pay the full cost of our courses. With your help, we can provide them with the life-changing experience of using the natural world as their classroom, doing hands-on research, and contributing to habitat improvement.
