About Mentoring
Serving as a mentor for the Dream Project is a great opportunity to work with promising youth. The opportunity requires dedication and compassion but also comes with great reward.
Mentors work with immigrant high schoolers in Virginia to help them:
* work their way through the college application process
* find and apply to appropriate scholarship opportunities
* develop post-secondary skills to prepare for the college environment
The mentoring program is offered on Zoom, every Tuesday evening, between the months of October and April each year. When possible, additional activities and events, such as in-person seminars and college tours, are scheduled throughout the year.
In considering prospective mentors, the Dream Project looks for individuals who:
*demonstrate knowledge of the college admissions process
are passionate about serving others and believe in post-secondary education opportunities for all students
*can commit to work with their mentees for at least 2 hours a week (mentor/mentee teams can decide on their own additional meetings, but attending the Tuesday sessions are expected)
are willing to maintain email communication (especially as deadlines approach)
Prospective mentors are required to submit an interest form, two personal references and agree to a background check. Please note that there is a mentor orientation (recorded and archived) and guidance throughout and during the sessions. A continuously updated Online Library is offered as a resource guide regarding details about applying to colleges and scholarships.
