Join the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi at Camp Kandu on Saturday, May 4 at Twin Lakes Conference Center in Florence, MS!
Relays, and arts and crafts! It’s like earning volunteer hours for playing! You will help our Kandu kids gain confidence and make new friends while their parents and grandparents receive the education that they need to better care for their kids with T1D! Meals and snacks are provided-all we need is YOU! Hours: 8:15 am-4 pm

Details: Camp takes place RAIN or SHINE! We will be doing a lot of walking on uneven terrain-please be in good physical shape before you sign up!

We need volunteers to help with:

  • Medical volunteer

    This task is filled or completed
    Looking for a few fantastic medical volunteers to help kids check their BG and treat the highs and lows of diabetes during Camp Kandu!
    Be with and observe campers at all times and have on hand: Monitors, strips, lancets, emergency sugar source, and band-aids ;)
    Perform regular first aid for the cuts, scrapes, bug bites, poison ivy, etc. that kids acquire when having fun in the great outdoors.

    • Accompany kids to various activities.
    • Check and record camper blood sugars immediately when hi/lo BG suspected. (symptom handout is in your backpack) Write blood glucose result in your team’s color coded log book (very important!).

     We have specified times for blood sugar checks too. Each group will check their sugar as a group. Team Nurse who will chart their info and give treatment for high or low blood sugars..

    This is perfect for high school, college students and students in nursing, allied health and other medical fields.!
    Your duties:
    Be with, observe, and interact with campers at all times.

    Keep the kids motivated and happy; encourage participation, cheer;
    and be a mediator if necessary!!!!

    Know where the medical volunteers are at all times and watch
    for these signs of Low Blood Sugar:
    Pale
    Shaking
    Sweaty
    Tired
    Irritable
    Weak/Dizzy

    Your kids are all color coded by groups with their T-shirts-please do a head count when we change location or switch activities. Kids with diabetes have Tyvek wristbands-please steer them toward blood glucose checking if they appear low or when it’s time for a scheduled blood glucose check.
