About Gun Violence Awareness Shirt Design Competition

Youth Gun Violence has been an undiscussed epidemic. To open a discussion about the gun violence epidemic, Connecticut Violence Intervention Program has created a shirt competition focusing on the use of words instead of weapons. “In Connecticut, black people are 18 times as likely to die by gun homicide as white people, compared to 10 times nationwide” (everytown stat). The winning design will be printed on t-shirts that will be bought by people around Connecticut and win $100.00!
Connecticut Violence Intervention Program used quotes from Citizen Outlaw: One Man’s Journey from Gangleader to Peacekeeper by Charles Barber because the book takes place in New Haven, Connecticut Violence Intervention Program’s building location. The book is about a gangleader from New Haven’s journey to becoming a peacekeeper in the streets he used to run. This journey explains gun violence in New Haven and how to help decrease the amount of young deaths. Below are quotes that Connecticut Violence Intervention Program thought would help inspire the designers to create shirts preventing gun violence in the Connecticut.
