About Communities In Schools of Central Texas: Volunteer Details

Most Communities In Schools volunteer opportunities are located on a school campus. Volunteers are matched to meet weekly with a student during the school year, beginning in the fall and continuing until the end of the school year.

READING BUDDIES
Students who are behind in reading levels by third grade are more likely to drop out of school before graduating. Reading Buddies provide extra support and encouragement to students, helping them gain literacy skills, build confidence, and develop a lifelong love of learning. Reading Buddies also serve as mentors for the student, building a trusting and consistent relationship over the course of the semester.

Requirements:
- 1.5 hour training
- Criminal background check
- Weekly commitment for the school year

SMARTKIDS
Our afterschool programming is on-site at four different public housing communities Mondays-Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Volunteers are needed to work with elementary students in a lively, fun and enriching afterschool environment. Volunteers engage students in academic support, activities, and serve as positive role models.

Requirements:
- 1.5 hour training
- Criminal background check
- Must be able to commit to 1.5 to 3 hours per week for a full academic school semester
- Must be able to volunteer between 3:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday
