The mission of Cockrum Civic Center is to encourage cooperation, fellowship, and cohesiveness within the community for all ages. Families are encouraged to become active members.
The mission wll be moved forward by restoring the Cockrum School as a new community center that can help revive the Cockrum community. Efforts to restore the building received significant boosts in the past year. In 2014, the circa 1928 building that functioned as a school until 1959 was designated as a Mississippi Historic Landmark. The Cockrum Civic Center won an $80,000 Mississippi Community Heritage Preservation Grant. T
But our group must match the grant with $20,000, and efforts to raise the money are intensifying.
So far, $5,000 has been raised. Cockrum Civic Center is sending letters to area residents asking for tax-deductible donations. If the $20,000 isn’t raised, the grant money will not be provided, said Allen’s daughter, Ellen Haraway, and work must be completed by December 2016, per the requirements of the grant.
Phase I of the restoration will focus on protecting the building from the elements. The roof must be replaced, and soon. When it rains outside, it rains inside.
