About Beach Microplastics

Given that plastics break down slowly so can persist for a long time, can serve as sources or vectors of toxins, and can enter into coastal food webs, it is important to understand the abundance of microplastics (plastics <5mm in diameter) on NH beaches. Join us in working with Dr. Gabriela Bradt (NH Sea Grant) to quantify the concentration of microplastics on NH beaches. We will collect sand samples from beaches subject to high and low levels of use. Plastics will then be sorted from the samples to determine the amount present.

We need volunteers to help with:

Beach microplastics training - Jenness Beach State Park - Noon to 1pm

March 7, 2014 7:00pm
This task is filled or completed
Join us at Jenness Beach State park at noon for a training on the beach microplastics sampling methods. Sampling for this project will occur throughout the month of April. Please bring your smartphone if you have one. We will be learning how to use a GPS app on the phones to locate the sampling sites. Training is mandatory for new participants. This event will serve as a great refresher for previous participants as well.

Beach microplastics training - Blue Ocean Discovery Center - 1 to 3pm

March 25, 2014 8:00pm
This task is filled or completed
Join us at the Blue Ocean Discovery Center in Hampton, NH for a training on the beach microplastics sampling methods. Sampling for this project will occur throughout the month of April. Please bring your smartphone if you have one. The first part of the training will take place indoors where you will learn how to use a GPS app on the phones to locate the sampling sites. We will then move outside to review the field sampling methods. Training is mandatory for new participants. This event will serve as a great refresher for previous participants, as well.
