CoachArt was founded in 2000 by Zander Lurie and Leah Bernthal, in memory of Zander’s father, Dr. Arthur Lurie, a cardiac surgeon who recognized the need for long-term support and enrichment amongst the pediatric patient population. The organization was incorporated as a 501(c)3 in 2001. In 2002, CoachArt launched as a pilot program at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, enrolling 50 patients in free arts and athletics lessons. Today, CoachArt offers high-quality arts and athletics activities to over 2,000 children. CoachArt accomplishes this service with two regional offices, an experienced 16-member staff, and a pool of more than 800 qualified, trained, and screened volunteers. More than 100 Community Program Partners donate lessons, activity spaces, and supplies to CoachArt each year. In 2011, the organization expanded into the San Francisco Bay, in partnership with Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland. With a sustainable funding stream and a strong base of volunteers and community partners, the San Francisco program has grown by five times its original size in two years.
