Please join us Monday, January 19th for a special MLK community volunteer day. We will be removing buckthorn and creating habitat at Albert A. White Park. This volunteer day will start at 11am and continue until 1pm. I will provide the tools to work with, the snacks to sustain us, and most importantly at this time of year, a heating station! We’ll meet at the parking lot off of Lake Lansing Rd (between the two curves. There’s a pavilion there).
Buckthorn is an invasive tree that takes over a forest quickly. By changing the soil chemistry, this tree makes it nearly impossible for anything to grow beneath it, except for its own offspring. We are working to remove this tree from our East Lansing Parks so that we can plant a diverse array of native trees, shrubs, and flowers in its place. The new landscape will offer more habitat choices for deer, rabbits, and other wildlife to enjoy as well as for our human residents too. If you would like to participate, I’d ask that you dress for the weather, wear long pants and sleeves and suggest that you some type of water proof shoe or work boot. Bring a pair of work gloves if you have your own. I have a limited number to share.
If you would like more information on invasive plant species (like buckthorn), workdays, or if you just want to keep up with your City’s happenings, check out our website http://www.cityofeastlansing.com/802/Environmental-Stewardship-Program and like our facebook page http://www.facebook.com/eastlansinghealthyparks?ref=hl.
I’d love it if you could join in the fun.
