About Coastal Youth Leaders

Helping youth develop a passion to care for their environment, engaging them in activities in which they can feel proud and empowered by their efforts, and recognizing them as true contributors to the well-being of their community are the goals behind Carlsbad Beach Foundation’s Coastal Youth Leaders (CYL) program.

Youth organizations throughout North County San Diego will have the opportunity to experience team-building challenges at local beaches and earn community service hours. The foundation will work with organizations such as the Boys Scouts of America, Girls Scouts of the USA, and student environmental groups in middle schools and high schools in order to engage students in local coastal improvement projects. The Beach Buddies component of the CYL program allows teens the opportunity to discover their abilities and become skilled leaders while mentoring younger children. Through their own experiences with the CYL program, teens can encourage good stewardship, teach proper ocean etiquette when engaging with marine wildlife, assist with and plan beach cleanups, and become team leaders on field trips to local tide pools and on full-day excursions to the Channel Islands.

CYL provides a fun way for kids to learn about their coastal environment and how to be good stewards while making friends, earning community service hours, and developing camaraderie with others who share similar values. It is the foundation’s hope that youth who become involved will stay involved for life.
