Big Thursday of Lancaster, a nonprofit 501c3 organization, raises funds to send Lancaster County students to University of South Carolina Lancaster or to Clemson University. With an acknowledgement to the competitive nature between the two universities, Big Thursday of Lancaster is about bringing the whole Lancaster County community together to make attending college a reality for our students.
The name Big Thursday is a tribute to the annual University of South Carolina v. Clemson football game which historically was known by this name and was held on the Thursday prior to Thanksgiving. Due to COVID-19, the Big Thursday events, which includes an annual golf tournament, live and silent auctions, and dinner that all focus on raising funds for scholarship has had to be postponed to 2021; however, the need for scholarships still exists. Since 2000, Big Thursday of Lancaster has raised $658,000 for Lancaster County students to attend USC Lancaster and Clemson University or $329,300 to USCL and Lancaster County Clemson Club each for scholarships.
Because of Big Thursday and its supporters, Lancaster County Clemson Club currently has 17 scholars at Clemson right now! Their scholarships are administered by Lancaster County Partners for Youth. Additionally, because of Big Thursday and its supporters, the University of South Carolina Lancaster Big Thursday Endowed Scholarship Fund is one of the largest endowments at USCL. Big Thursday scholars are from all four high schools in the Lancaster County School District.
