About Big Class after-school volunteer

We're recruiting weekly volunteers for our after-school programs, Open Studio and After-Care @ Akili Academy.

Open Studio provides a safe third space (besides school and home) after school to inspire learning, foster creativity, and help students understand and complete their homework each day. Neighborhood students receive after-school free one-on- one homework help in all subject areas. When their homework is finished, students get to work on writing and art projects with the opportunity to get published in a Big Class Occasional (collections of writing from the studio).

At Akili Academy, Big Class works to enrich the literacy culture for writers in 1st through 8th grade through volunteer support and publishing during the school day and after-school. We teach a Writers’ Workshop and School Newspaper class, work with teachers to integrate Big Class into their classrooms, and run a creative writing after- school program.

Application Process

Go to bigclass.org/volunteerapp to fill out an application. Once you do, we'll contact you about scheduling a volunteer orientation.
