About Education and Outreach Volunteer

Education Volunteers are involved in the many programs that the Aquarium provides to engage and educate our visitors, both onsite and in the community. Opportunities open to these volunteers may include the following:
--Representing the Aquarium at community festivals like Pride, Art and Soul, Bay Area Science Festival, and other events throughout the Bay Area
--Interpreting aquarium exhibits, including answering guest questions, providing interesting animal information, explaining animal behavior and their roles in the ecosystem, and discussing the importance of conservation
--Getting kids excited about the San Francisco Bay by assisting Aquarium teachers with school programs and tours
--Creating memorable experiences by helping with visitor programs such as parties, scout programs, and special events.

Qualifications:
Must be interested in San Francisco Bay biology, be willing to learn about Aquarium operations and memberships, and be eager to engage with people of all ages and from different backgrounds. A love for people, patience, excellent verbal communication skills, flexibility and a sense of humor are essential in this position. Second language skills are a plus.

Requirements:
Must be at least 18 years old, in good physical condition to stand for up to four hours at a time and lift at least 25 pounds. Must be comfortable talking with the general public and in front of groups, and support the Aquarium of the Bay’s mission. Must pass brief written tests as part of training.
Training will include information on:
-Our animals, exhibits, and the Bay ecology
-Our hours of operation and membership levels and benefits
-Ongoing updates regarding upcoming events and online campaigns

Commitment
Ability to work a minimum of 16 hours per month for at least six months, and commit to an initial training period of one month, with additional trainings to follow.
