About Animal Care Assistant

Animal care volunteers provide daily care to our patients and non-releasable permanent resident animals under the guidance of our Certified Wildlife Rehabilitator and members of our Board.

The general responsibilities of Animal Care Assistants may include:

Cleaning indoor and outdoor enclosures, washing dishes or loading/unloading dishwasher, and laundry.
Ensuring cages and enclosures remain safe for patients and residents
Preparing daily diets; both solid and formula.
Hand feeding infant and juvenile patients.
Providing enrichment activities to patients and permanent residents.
Assisting with the patient intakes.
Preparing activities for our public outreach programs (after the animal care is completed)

Requirements for all volunteers at Acorn Acres:

Must be at least 25 years of age and possess at least a high school diploma or equivalent.
Must have reliable transportation and be lawfully licensed to operate.
Must commit to schedule of at least 4 hours, same day, same shift, weekly for a minimum of 6 months.
Must be willing to work in all conditions, including outdoors. Must be able to stand for your entire shift.
Must be prompt and dress appropriately for working conditions.
Must be able to work independently.
Must sign a volunteer agreement, waiver of liability, and complete a (free) state background check.
