A message from Jonny Law, Board Chair of Habitat for Humanity of the Eastern Bighorns

What is the value of your home? (Heads up: this IS a trick question).

The value of my home is what it provides me and my family. To me, it provides safety, comfort, relaxation, retreat. It allows my family to grow. It allows my friendships to become deeper. The value of my home is more than just the money I paid. And yet, there’s many out there that miss the opportunity to experience the value of a true home because of that money detail.

With that said, it’s been a pleasure serving on the Habitat for Humanity of the Eastern Bighorns Board for the last two years along side some of Sheridan’s best, and an honor to be entrusted as Chair of the Board. Of those two years, I’ve learned a lot about the unique problems our community faces when it comes to affordable and attainable housing. I’m sure these problems aren’t a surprise to those privy to Sheridan’s housing market - as you know:

High Demand + Low Supply = Expensive Market

Habitat is one of the few organizations focused on being a piece of the solution to those problems. And now we have an opportunity to grow. An opportunity to build more, do more, and serve more.

One [unique] thing about Habitat is that it’s not just a hand out. It’s a hand up. Partner families go through an application process similar to the process of applying for a conventional mortgage. Then we approve partner families based on our capacity to build. This year we had a record amount of applications. We couldn’t just tell these folks no. We increased our approved families to four which brings us to seven families in various stages of construction.

And that is just a fraction of the true need in the community. In order to grow, we recognized a few key needs:

1. Space for construction team growth & offices (allowing for more homes built & more necessary home improvements - ask me about A Brush with Kindness)

2. Space to store pre-purchased construction materials

3. Consolidation of team members (currently we are spread throughout three offices in Sheridan)

4. Space for continued growth for the Habitat ReStore (currently we have to turn away donations due to limited sales floor/donation processing)

5. Increased community visibility & accessibility for the Habitat ReStore

Our collective board and the Habitat staff worked together to do our due diligence to identify a potential space and assess its attributes and fitment to those needs. 44 Fort Road checked all of the boxes - so we went into action.

To date, we have been able to secure a decent portion of the overall cost to purchase and renovate our new Habitat HQ. But we’re not completely there.

If you have a heart for seeing families in Sheridan receive a place to call home with similar values of a true home I mentioned above, please spend some time thinking about participating in our fundraising efforts. We can’t do this without you. We can’t continue to bring hope to families without you. We can’t continue to build community without you. We can’t continue to build houses for those in need without you.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask. If you don’t have the financial means, spreading the word is just as important.

Last but certainly not least, a huge thank you to the Standish Family Fund in being moved by Habitat and providing a $200k match. You are such a valued partner of Habitat and appreciate your partnership more than words can offer.
