WestConn Athletics and Recreation

Westconn Athletics provides outstanding opportunities on the field, on the court, in the pool and in the larger community. 

Our eighteen NCAA DIII programs are led by highly committed

coaches and mentors who, with almost 500 student-athletes, work

together to promote a culture of excellence and diversity.  

Westconn Athletics has experienced unprecedented growth both in the number of sports and in the number of students who compete.  The number of student-athletes has grown by over 25% from 398-498.  This is a record number for the department and is a testament to the University and the recruiting efforts by our coaches.    

In addition to realizing record growth, WestConn continues to compete on a national level.  The fall of 2018 was perhaps one of the best with both soccer programs, field hockey and volleyball qualifying for Conference Tournaments and the men’s and women’s soccer programs earning NCAA bids.  WestConn continues to add to its NCAA post-season appearances which include championship play in women's soccer (14), women's basketball (13), softball (13), men's basketball (12), men's soccer (10), women's volleyball (6), football (1985, 1999 and 2001), baseball in 2002 and men’s lacrosse in 2008.  Both the women's and men's tennis teams made their first NCAA appearance in 2010.  Softball advanced to the Division III College World Series in 2002 and the women's soccer team appeared in the NCAA Division III College Cup during the fall of 2007.   Men’s basketball advanced to the Elite 8 in 1990 while the women’s basketball program appeared in the Sweet 16 in 1997.

Despite our many successes, we still have much to do.   Westconn needs some facility and field upgrades, technology enhancements,  and growing annual travel expenditures for many teams Spring trips.  Philanthropic support for our programs is vital to the success of our students.  It will allow us to ensure excellence, inspire pride within our current students as well as alumni, and continue to build champions for life.
