We Are Resilient

For the entire month of May, we are celebrating the resilience found within and around Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. #LotusRising

A fundraising campaign for Friends of Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens

"Just like the lotus flower, we too have the ability to rise from the mud, bloom out of the darkness and radiate into the world" - Buddha (paraphrased)

Spring is always a time of growth and change. This year is obviously quite different, as we are all experiencing more change and growth than usual.

Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens undergoes an amazing seasonal transformation every year. Right now the green hardy water lilies have sprouted up to the surface of the ponds and the first lotus stem has pushed its way out of the muck.

Many of our supporters have shared with me that the park has been a friend to them in times of difficulty, with the natural surroundings serving as a reminder of the resilience and cycle of life.

The Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens was built on the notion that the natural world is a place for healing and growth. After losing his right arm in the Civil War, Walter Shaw, the historic owner of the land that is now the Aquatic Gardens, looked to the wild beauty of the Anacostia River and its surrounding wetland for rejuvenative joy. Fast forward a few decades, and that land is now a national park site dedicated to showcasing and connecting visitors to the splendor of the Anacostia wetland.

We are ever grateful for the National Park Service staff who are tending to the ponds. As Friends of the park, we are helping to ensure they have the materials to foster a thriving aquatic gardens now and are at-the-ready to provide volunteers as soon as we are able. We are also grateful for the wider National Park Service efforts in DC that are helping to keep Rock Creek and Anacostia Park trails and roads open and accessible, allowing us all to still enjoy the outdoors safely.

We hope you consider making a donation to Friends of Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens so we can continue to connect you to the park through volunteer, education and recreational opportunities.

May we also take a few lessons from the lotus and together rise out of this muck.
