Universal Design is an improvement upon the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements and intends to allow full accessibility to all people regardless of age, disability, or other factors.
Though there are existing playgrounds within Orange County that are ADA compliant, unfortunately, under that compliance, accessibility concerns that may limit an individual with a disability's full participation persist. For example, certain types of mulch are ADA compliant, however, those with wheeled mobility devices may be unable to maneuver them across it or do so without significant overexertion.
The proposed playground design includes flooring comprised of a smooth rubberized surface which is easier to maneuver, shaded areas, a large, low to the ground play structure, an 'Inclusive Whirl' built into the ground, communication boards, new fencing to reduce risk of elopement, and a multitude of adaptive swings that allow inclusion of both children and caregivers with disabilities.
Our hope is that this playground design will not only allow individuals of all ability levels the opportunity to participate within their communities, but also set a precedent for future playground designs in our area and beyond.
