Trout in the Classroom

With your donation, youngsters can raise trout fish from eggs, release them locally, and learn about ecosystems, watersheds, biology, conservation, and more!

Cornell Cooperative Extension's 4-H Youth Development Shooting Sports in Sullivan County works through volunteers in the disciplines of Archery, Rifle, Pistol, Muzzleloader, and Shotgun... but did you know the program also works in the fields of Environmental Education, Hunting Education, and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM)?

Due to donations from people like you, the 4-H youth environmental education program's Trout in the Classroom conservation project was made possible in 2017! Using an established curriculum, program leaders worked with youth to raise trout fish from eggs provided by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), through all stages of life, for their eventual release into local waterways. Youth members and volunteers cared for the trout for over 31 weeks and over 225 hours! This project, which was the most successful release in New York State, was awarded "Special Recognition for Outstanding Exhibits" and the "Best of Fair" at the New York State Fair!

Using a science-based curriculum, adult volunteers work with youth to raise trout fish from eggs, provided by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), through all stages of life-- for their eventual release into local waterways.

Throughout the duration of the project, youth learn about:

              • Ecosystems
              • Watersheds
              • Biology of fish
              • Caring for fish eggs & fry
              • Maintenance of a fish tank
              • The importance of conservation

Your generous donation can help with program and equipment costs that make this opportunity possible for children eager to learn about conservation. With enough funding and interest, 4-H intends to make this an annual project in Sullivan County.

If you would like to help keep this conservation program going for years to come, please donate today!
