Beating the Odds:

Connections Graduates Seven Seniors

Did you know that only 50% of children in foster care will graduate high school? Young adults that lack a high school diploma are at greater risk for incarceration and homelessness and less likely to earn a living wage. These challenges, combined with the obstacles kids face from a lifetime in foster care, result in almost insurmountable odds for youth in care.

Connections exists to give youth hope for a better future. Through its Transitional Living Program (TLP), staff house, guide and mentor high-school aged youth preparing to exit care. TLP youth benefit from tutoring and training in budgeting, life skills, and job seeking. With this added support, Connections is proud to have 100% graduation rate this year with the following seven successful graduates!!

Elian loves technology and video games. He is very talkative, has great conversations, and is extremely attentive to details. He enjoys working at a local fast food restaurant. He is still contemplating his future plans after graduation.

Deonasia is the ultimate fashionista. She enjoys hair, make-up and nails. She’s a self-taught cosmetologist and can do nails as well as a professional. She plans to earn her certification in cosmetology with a goal of starting her own salon. She is working on getting a car.

Alyssa is quiet and observant. She just started working at a local pizza establishment and enjoys interacting with others and meeting new people. She has a great personality and is very witty. Her goal is to attend college to become an anesthesiologist.

Jayonna is motivated and a self-starter. She is not afraid of challenges and strives to do her best in whatever life hands her. She is currently working at a fast food restaurant and enjoys customer service. She was recently offered an internship in hospitality at a local hospital. Her goal is to become a registered nurse.

Richard is very caring and helpful. He would do anything to help others. He is creative and has a broad imagination. He has a passion for photography. He is still contemplating his future plans after graduation.

Carol is very caring and helpful. She is a people person and has an outgoing personality. She is a hard worker and enjoys being in customer service. She will be attending San Antonio Community College and plans to major in Psychology so she can help others in a hospital setting. She is working on getting a car for her transportation needs.

Skyelar is very independent and a self-starter. She advocates for herself and others. She is currently working as a server assistant and is wonderful in customer service. She loves plants and has grown beautiful plants out of cuttings. She truly has a “green thumb.” Her goal is to attend Austin Community College and transfer to UT. She has been working hard saving to get a vehicle.

By supporting our Transitional Living Program, you can help kids like these have a better chance at success. While some of these youth might be moving on to apartments or supervised independent living programs, there will always be more youth needing a safe place to sleep and a shoulder to lean on. Please consider giving today.
