The War Horse

Award-Winning Newsroom Educating the Public About War and Its Impact.

A fundraising campaign for The War Horse News

The War Horse was founded in 2016 thanks to more than 500 Kickstarter donors who believed in the power and importance of serious journalism. Over the last two years, we’ve seen that demand for storytelling about the Forever War is far greater than we’d anticipated. It’s the support of generous donors like you and the funding of initiatives like NewsMatch that have helped make work like ours possible—fearless journalism that educates the public about the U.S. military, war, and its impact.

Our Accomplishments in 2018

  • Our team gave voice to military and veteran families. To date, we have published more than 120 reflections by writers who range from military spouses and West Point graduates to infantrymen and mechanics. These stories are the cornerstone of our newsroom, ensuring that those who have been directly impacted by war and military service continue to have a prominent voice in the national conversation.

  • Our team continued building our business and organizational infrastructure. We filed financial documents, drafted corporate governance policies, developed our strategic plan, and identified metrics to measure our impact and ensure we are delivering on our mission. Single-subject nonprofit newsrooms like The War Horse are the fastest growing sector in journalism and supporters like you are vital to our sustainability. Your support remains vital.

  • We grew our diverse community of writers. In 2018, our team hosted our Writing Seminar for Women Veterans at Boulder Crest Retreat and our Writing Seminar for Military Spouses at the Carey Institute for Global Good. To date, our Fellows have published more than 65 stories with our newsroom, USA Today, CNN, and The New York Times. Our writing seminars are where the best writers of today pay it forward to the most promising military writers of tomorrow.

What's Next For Us in 2019

  • We will begin regularly publishing investigative reporting. Your donation helps ensure that our team has the resources to publish important, fearless journalism that educates the public about war and its impact.

  • We will further develop crucial business infrastructure and welcome vital members to our newsroom team. In 2019, we will formally announce founding board members and launch our redesigned website, an upgrade that will improve user experience and broaden story distribution.

How You Can Help

  • Make a one-time donation to support our writers. To date, more than 50 veterans, active duty service members, and civilians have bravely shared stories exploring moral injury and human rights, gender and suicide. Your support of these writers and their stories will be doubled, up to $1,000.

  • Become a Founding Member by pledging a monthly recurring donation during NewsMatch—now through the end of the year. Thanks to the Knight Foundation, Democracy Fund, the MacArthur Foundation, the Jonathan Logan Family Foundation, and many others your donation and its impact on our team will be doubled.
