The Moving Project

Help Habitat Move a House into the Neighborhood.

A fundraising campaign for Harriet Tubman Academic Skills Center

In 1992, a Cape Cod style home was built on XX acres in the town of Staasburgh, New York. It's only resident was a retired priest. Undoubtedly, he enjoyed his senior years in this lovely, yet unassuming home overlooking the beautiful, rolling countryside.  Upon the priest's passing, the home was sold to a couple from Long Island, who fell in love with the property and it's majestic views. However, the couple want to live in a new, larger house than the priest's Cape Cod home.  Rather them demolish the well-built, charming Cape, the kind and generous couple from Long Island are donating the house to Habitat for Humanity!

And thus, the Moving Project was born!

We are now busy making all the necessary arrangements to have the priest's charming Cape Cod house MOVED to a lot in the City of Poughkeepsie that is owned by Habitat Dutchess. The house will be carefully prepared, lifted, set on a truck, transported, lifted again, then set down on its new foundation on the corner of Harrison and Smith Street.

The neighbors there are eager to welcome the house to the community. This "Moving Project" will transform the vacant lot into a safe, charming and affordable home in a neighborhood that often faces the challenges of poverty. This will be the FOURTH Habitat home in a 4 block area! And after 3 straight years of home repairs and improvements during the Thrivent Builds/Habitat Dutchess MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY, this 5th Ward community is becoming a model of revitalization and rejuvenation.

The Moving Project is expected to cost approximately $XX,XXX. Using the Habitat for Humanity model, the home will be sold to a partner family in need of decent housing for as low a price as possible. And that is why Habitat Dutchess is seeking assistance from the community for the Moving Project. Here are ways that YOU can be a part of this unique experience:
