ESL/Citizenship Classes

Recently we have had a large upswing in those requiring tutoring. This influx of students has resulted in the creation of 3 classes.

A fundraising campaign for Literacy Volunteers of Sullivan County

The mission of LVSCNY is to foster and enhance adult and family literacy through the efforts of a corps of trained volunteer tutors who assist adults functioning at the lowest literacy levels. Further proficiency in English as a Second Language (ESL) for those who desire it. All services are provided free of charge.

Sullivan County NY has a culturally diverse population with 28% of our residents speaking languages other than English in the home. The majority of students are Spanish speaking, but we also have languages such as Farsi, Arabic, and Korean.

In recent months, we have had a large upswing in those requiring ESL tutoring. This influx of students has resulted in the creation of 3 classes. 2 Basic ESL classes and one Citizenship class. These classes run 2x a week for 2 hours each class. Each class has between 9 and 15 students.

The tutors who teach these classes have gone from an initial Volunteer commitment of no more than 3 hours per week to over 6 hours when you factor in class preparation and grading of work. We would like to offer these tutors compensation for the hours that they are tutoring. This would allow us to add more classes if and when they are needed. The tutors would be providing their preparation and travel time free of charge.
