S.A. Heron Birthday Campaign 2021

Telling the complete downtown story.

A fundraising campaign for San Antonio Heron

Our campaign

For the first time in our history, we at the San Antonio Heron have secured the support of a local foundation to help us raise money in the first campaign we are organizing on our own.

We’re thrilled to announce that the H. E. Butt Foundation is contributing $10,000 in matching dollars toward our 2021 Birthday Campaign.

Here's how it works:

Now through July 7, the H. E. Butt Foundation will double your one-time gift (up to $5,000). Or, become a monthly donor and the foundation will match the value of a full year.

With the match, we have the opportunity to raise $30,000 (our own $20,000 goal, plus $10,000 in additional matching funds). This infusion of reader support will help ensure we continue producing the high-quality, independent, local journalism you’ve come to depend on.

The time is now. Trusted journalism like ours has never mattered more.

Give today and double the impact of your donation.

Our mission

The San Antonio Heron is a nonprofit nonpartisan newsroom reporting on downtown growth and the ripple effect it has on inner city neighborhoods, while mentoring local students interested in serving their community through storytelling.

About us

Since launching in June 2018, we have moderated the ongoing progress vs. preservation discussion in San Antonio through our content and events, and on social media.

We are dedicated to understanding how central San Antonio is changing: the steriodic growth around the Pearl; the gentrification of the near East Side; the west end's metamorphosis with the Frost Tower, San Pedro Creek Culture Park, and UTSA's upcoming expansion. We're here to chronicle the change.

We specialize in meaty analysis and deep dives, such as a recent examination of the term "workforce housing," and a comprehensive profile of Weston Urban's planned 32-story apartment tower, which no other news organization in San Antonio is doing. We also wrote a public development in Lavaca that's been in the works since the Clinton administration.

Our second objective is the “how?” We aim to raise the standard for journalism in San Antonio by embracing a reader-first philosophy, while obsessing over objectivity and fairness. Our third goal is to create an internship program for San Antonio students who may want to pursue writing and photography.

Simply put, we exist to inform our readers. That is our only obligation. We do not produce our journalism for personal gain, for awards, nor for vanity.
