Farm animals aren't always what someone might expect when we talk about the work of our humane law department. But when the state police contacted us about a possible cockfighting operation, it went to the top of our to-do list.
The cruel and inhumane treatment these roosters experienced is unfathomable. Feathers removed, combs and waddles cut off without anesthesia, spurs removed - the pain they endured before even being forced to fight is unconscionable.
Forty one roosters were found, prepared to fight, when we arrived on the scene late in the evening. Through the darkness, we removed each animal, loaded them into our transports, and brought them back to the Ulster County SPCA. They were examined by our veterinary team, with all of their injuries documented.
Fortunately, most of them had not fought yet and were young, meaning they can be rehabilitated, and rehomed to local farms. Although they may always wear the scars of their previous life as animals forced to fight for human entertainment and monetary benefit, we know that thanks to our intervention - and your support - they will have happy futures that do not involve pain and suffering.
arm animals require special attention. Please consider making a donation in support of these roosters. THANK YOU for your support.
