Restoration & Expansion of Peterborough Library

Bringing the nation's first tax-supported library into the 21st Century with access for all, cutting-edge technology, new meeting spaces and children's area.

A fundraising campaign for 1833 Society/Peterborough Town Library

Why a New Library?
Founded in 1833, the Peterborough Town Library has the historical distinction of being the nation’s first free public library supported by taxation. In 2004, the Peterborough Library Trustees formally identified the critical issues in the current library facility. Some of them include:
•    Non-ADA compliant entrances and no elevator
•    In adequate fire prevent & sprinkler system
•    Inefficient electrical, heating and cooling systems
•    Old windows and carpeting
•    Outdated plumbing and toilet systems

After more than a decade of preparation, the Trustees are bringing forward the best solution to upgrade this important town facility. New design plans from Ann Beha Architects of Boston call for the historic 1892 building to be restored and respectfully integrated with a new wing which will replace the 1957 and 1978 additions. The expanded 17,000 square foot facility (currently the Library has 12,000 square feet of usable space) will feature:
•    Large meeting room with catering service station
•    Small meetings rooms, including technology classroom
•    Young Adult (teen) space and homework area
•    Separate area for children with makerspace
•    Integrated technology throughout
•    Fully ADA compliant
•    Outdoor green spaces along river
The Library is a vital resource center for literacy and lifelong learning and the new Library will expand its role by becoming an important community hub.

Campaign Timetable and Budget
The Library’s 1833 Society, a non-profit organization, was founded in 2011 with the mission to oversee the design of a new library and assist with raising the funds for the project. Under their leadership, a volunteer-driven capital campaign is raising funds required for this $8.5 million landmark project. As of Spring 2018, the campaign has raised approximately $7.1 million from private donors, foundations, companies, NH State agencies, and a $3 million dollar bond from the Town of Peterborough. The goal is to secure the additional $1.4 million by late summer 2018 and to start construction in Fall 2018. The campaign committee is launching  the community phase and invite our many Peterborough Library friends and supporters to consider making a donation through NH Gives.
