Project Light Up the Night

A fundraising campaign for Bike Bakersfield

Bike Bakersfield celebrates the dark Autumn evenings each year and distributes over 2,000 front/rear light sets for free to residents from Oildale to Arvin.

Each year for Project Light Up the Night (PLUTN) we purchase factory-direct equipment to residents who bike over to one of our four community locations. This includes vehicle code-compliant front and rear light sets as well as helmets for those who do not have one. Each item is installed by our staff and trained volunteers. *check out our Volunteer Opportunities on GiveGab to become a PLUTN Volunteer!

Many of the 20 pedestrian or cyclist fatalities that occurred in 2017 were due to inadequate illumination during night hours. Part of Bike Bakersfield's mission is to reduce the number of accidents in our community, and while our efforts make a big difference there are still many cyclists who still ride at night without lights. This practice is both illegal and life-threatening.

Wholesale children's helmets are approximately $10 each. An adult helmet costs approximately $20. Battery-operated light sets are approximately $7, and includes a white front light and red rear light.

Even a $5 donation is well on its way to ensuring that a bicyclist can be seen by passing cars, other cyclists, and even pedestrians. With your support Bike Bakersfield will be able to provide free helmets and light sets that will directly prevent accidents and save countless lives. Your tax-deductible donation to PLUTN will create a culture of safe cycling in and around Bakersfield.

Thank you for your continued support of community vitality, public health, and the mission of Bike Bakersfield.
