Prisoner Book Club

Prisoners who are reading and sharing their reflections on The New Jim Crow, by Michelle Alexander. Will you chip in on postage to include them?

A fundraising campaign for Prisoner Express

We're including prisoners in a conversation about mass incarceration...

and to do this requires postage, lots of it. Will you help us reach our goal and send books, correspondence and help a group of prisoners share their thoughts on the New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander?

This program will allows prisoners across the U.S., even those in solitary confinement to participate in a conversation about the New Jim Crow. In the end, it's prisoners reading, writing, and reading each other's perspectives.

Here's how it works:

Your contribution helps us know how many books we can send – as well as printing costs for correspondence, return envelopes for prisoners, and additional mailings.

We're experienced at this...

We've done dozens of programs like this in the past, and we can't wait to offer this important opportunity to those who want to be a part of it. We have all the systems in place to pull this off – in fact, we run this out of a library. We have staff, volunteers, procedures, and a good reputation with sending materials to prisons. We just need your support to fund the program.

No overhead, no commission, this is dollar for dollar impact.

Every dollar that you donate goes immediately to the postage and printing costs involved in pulling this off. We're relying on you to contribute, and also to tell your network about this opportunity. Together we can make this happen. If we exceed our fundraising goal then we'll simply be able to send more books!

Once you've pitched in, we'll send you the completed compilation of writing – all the reflections about the book by prisoners enrolled in our program.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read about this program, and for helping to send books to prisoners.

Last few days!!! Still a ways to go.

September 12, 2017

Hi Everyone,

We're in the homestretch and we really don't want to turn down people.

Will you pitch in to help us reach out goal? We're announcing this book club to over 3,500 prisoners in the next week or so and we'd love to have a sense of how many packages we can send out. As of this update we can send about 85 packages. Yikes!

Prisoners deserve to be part of a conversation on this topic. Through this program they'll not only share their thoughts on the New Jim Crow with us, but with eachother as well. We'll use the funds you contribute to circulate the writing and reflection and essentially help make a book club happen, despite the separation and isolation they experience.

Thanks for everything, and for helping to spread the word.

Ryan & Gary from Prisoner Express.

About the Organization

Prisoner Express creates an opportunity for incarcerated men and women to get information, education and a public forum for creative self-expression.

Through our newsletters and programs we step through the isolation and alienation of prison life – our goal is to bring hope and foster a sense of community among the 4000+ prisoners who participate.
