Nevada State College’s ebook collection would occupy about 140,000 square feet if it was a physical collection. To put that in perspective, if the books were placed on one long shelf they would stretch from the Las Vegas Strip to the Hoover Dam at the Arizona border.
Typically, when one thinks of a college library, it’s comprised of stacks and stacks of tomes on all sorts of subjects. Just as it’s revamped other parts of the dated college status quo, Nevada State College is proud that its library isn’t the “same old thing.” The Marydean Martin Library holds the unique status of being the first completely digital library in the state.
Since going digital, the statistics reflect a large increase in use of the physical library. Visits to the space have increased almost 80 percent and group study room use has increased 300%. In addition, there is a positive relationship between use of Nevada State’s library resources and student GPAs.
The library’s offerings are very convenient, in that students can access the collection from any internet-enabled device. The collection can be accessed from on- or off-campus, at any time of the day or night. Without the space requirements of a physical collection, the digital collection provides access to an enormous number of books and journals which maximizes the space for students to study and engage with each other.
With this focus on student success, the Friends of the Marydean Martin Library is committed to enhancing resources like the digital collection and initiatives that leverage technology for the benefit of students, faculty, and the community.
While the core mission of libraries to provide and preserve access to knowledge remains constant, Nevada State’s Marydean Martin Library also provides spaces for reflection, creativity, and collaboration as well as information and technology services that enhance the success of the communities it serves.
Your tax-deductible contribution in any amount will support initiatives within the Marydean Martin Library with the most need.
