Motherhood Is A Joke

Guiding mothers in creative exploration of what makes us laugh, what makes us cry, and how we hold the community together

A fundraising campaign for Kitchen Theatre Company

At a time of political upheaval and environmental peril, many of us recognize that for our world to heal, we need to listen to the mothers and focus attention on all the nurturers in our community.

Motherhood is a Joke is the first program of the Listen to the Mothers Project, an open-ended collaboration between multidisciplinary creative forces in our community working together to bring forth a more caring world order by amplifying the voices of those who nurture humanity but are too often taken for granted, unseen and unheard.

Kitchen Theatre Company (KTC), Mama’s Comfort Camp (MCC), Singin' Notes and Slingin' Jokes artists Elbonee "Trece" Stevenson and Kenneth McLaurin will join creative forces to host an exciting new workshop series between October 2019 and March 2020 in which local moms gather to share their experiences of motherhood through storytelling, humor, and performance. The workshops are designed in a unique format called Creative Safety Nest, a warm and comforting circle of sisterhood. These workshops would allow moms of all kinds, ages, and stages to meet a deep need for self-expression, which is so sorely missing for most mothers and will foster meaningful one-on-one connections that build a strong and diverse network of support for area moms.

The program will culminate in Spring 2020 with a Spring Comedy Showcase in Kitchen Theatre's performance space. The skills and confidence generated in this project will help mothers continue to share their stories and viewpoints in other settings, increasing civic engagement and activism.

If you would like to Honor a Mother, please provide the dedication as you would like it to appear in the "Add a Message" section when you make your gift. (For example: "in loving memory of my mother, Kate Smith" or "in honor of Elena Brown, my best friend")

All dedications for gift of $50 and above will be listed in the Spring Comedy Showcase program.

Thank you for your support!
