Help Us Prevent Sexual Abuse in the Fashion Industry
Over the past couple of months, numerous people working in the fashion industry have come forward to share their stories of sexual harassment and assault on the job. Sadly, we were not surprised by these stories. For the past five years, we've worked to establish labor rights to prevent abusive working conditions in the fashion industry, while providing support to those facing abuse. Sexual harassment and abuse of models is a common and pervasive problem. Recently, the Model Alliance hosted a meeting with a group of models to discuss their experiences and concerns regarding sexual harassment on the job. We posed a question to the group: Who had been put on the spot at a casting or job to pose nude? Every single hand went up.
Over the past couple of months, our volunteer-run program has been inundated with requests. With your help, we aim to create a robust, greatly expanded program. We want to formulate and implement “best practices” that would not only support compliance with sexual harassment law, but also reach more broadly to consider and address patterns of organizational behavior and culture that tend to generate sexual harassment and disrespect.
