At MLK50, we believe accountability + abundance = justice. That’s why our journalism takes aim at the policies that keep Memphians poor and celebrates our people’s resistance.
What did accountability and abundance look like in 2023?
This year, we held power to account by:
-
Continuing to call out FedEx’s unsafe working conditions that resulted in another preventable death.
-
Spotlighting environmental racism against South Memphis residents as they navigate decades of exposure to toxins.
-
Reporting how landlords and developers are once again displacing residents for profit.
We also made sure to capture the joy of our community by:
-
Documenting the glory of a Juneteenth celebration in Orange Mound.
-
Capturing how Memphians showed up to protest their state rep being stripped of his power.
-
Reflecting on how, despite an unprecedented state legislative attack on trans people, queer Memphians continued to embrace their freedom.
What your donation supports:
We’re raising $75,000 by Dec. 31 to grow our coverage. We’re adding a government accountability reporter and a public safety reporter because this year affirmed just how important those issues are to our community.
