The MWL Education Fund is hosting its 4th biennial Women’s Summit on Economic Security on October 2nd. Recent headlines recount the stories of sexual assault on Maine college campuses, workplace abuse of immigrant farm workers, and rape in a high school parking lot. Maine is not immune to the personal accounts that led to the Me Too movement. For this reason, this year’s summit is called, #MaineToo: Taking Action against sexual assault, harassment, and exploitation. Our goal is to bring further attention to the widespread and pervasive nature of sexual harassment, assault and exploitation and to highlight the negative economic impact on victims; to examine more deeply the variety of root causes; to focus on strategies for prevention and healing; to identify policy solutions; and to spur action to create change.
Featured guest speaker is Tarana Burke, civil rights activist and founder of the Me Too movement.
Ticket cost can not be a barrier and for this reason, we are launching this campaign to raise $1,500 so that 30 people may attend for free. We know that certain populations are most vulnerable to assault – women living in poverty, women of color, immigrants, and trans women, and women who lack power.
