KY Gives Books: 1,000 Ways YOU Can Change Lives

We are raising $1,000 to ship 1,000 books to a library in a Kurdish refugee camp. "Providing books to children is the key to a peaceful tomorrow." -- D. Morad

A fundraising campaign for International Book Project

Do you remember the first book that changed YOUR life?

Each day, we at International Book Project receive applications and letters from partners that reinforce our belief that books change lives. If one book can change a life, imagine the impact that 1,000 books can have on a village, a community, or, in this case, a refugee camp in Iraq?

Green Kids is an international Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) working to promote education in Kurdistan, a region that is now home to millions of people displaced by wars in Syria and Iraq. Since 2015, Green Kids has built four mini-libraries in Kurdish refugee camps and is currently completing its fifth. Each mini-library is stocked with books in Kurdish, Arabic, and English so that children have the opportunity to read, learn, and engage in stories beyond their own.

"If you look at the horror and tragic experiences of the children in refugee camps, it can be quite shocking to witness. How do they cope? How can we make sure these children get to be children? How can we help them develop their dreams and talents?," explains Dashni Morad, founder of Green Kids and an Iraqi Kurdish-Dutch singer, songwriter, and humanitarian activist.

"We believe a library is the best way to escape their trauma and to feed their dreams."

International Book Project is eager to help by sending 1,000 books to Green Kids to distribute to libraries and schools in Kurdistan.

You can help by supporting this project with a gift of $25, $50, or $100 to reach -- or exceed! -- our goal of $1,000 to fund this shipment. If we raise this amount through Kentucky Gives Day, it will be matched on a dollar for dollar basis by a generous foundation in Kentucky.

Since 1966, International Book Project has been sending packages of books in shipments large and small.

Our founder, Harriet Van Meter, had a vision of promoting literacy, education, and global friendships. Guided by her vision, we develop relationships with partners, curating shipments based on what they ask for, and continuing those relationships over many years.

Every dollar contributed to International Book Project sends one book to a library, school or organization in the United States or abroad. Books Change Lives.
