Your support today will help power tomorrow’s workforce.
For the second consecutive year, WNY STEM Hub is partnering with the Girl Scouts of Western New York, SUNY Buffalo State and AT&T to present a Computer Coding Camp exclusively for girls, beginning this July.
Proceeds from this
year’s Spring It On campaign will help fund this unique experience for middle
school to high school-aged girls from some of our region’s urban highest-need
populations. Your support will keep the participation fee very modest and
affordable, and will make free, refurbished computers available to those
participants who otherwise have no computer access.
Last year’s Computer Coding Camp welcomed 36 girls from low-income communities. The girls learned leadership skills and the basics of computer coding – a rapidly growing field – and began creating apps, websites, games and programs that sparked their imagination and put their new skills to work. Teams of girls worked with mentors (local tech professionals, educators, and advocates) to continue coding and developing even after camp ended.
Computer coding is an essential part of our innovation economy, and is the foundation of all new technology. Encouraging girls to learn coding and inspiring them to embrace science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) pursuits now will open valuable career pathways to them as they mature.
“There’s a real need for a girls coding
education program in the region to inspire interest in computer science careers,”
said WNY STEM Hub President, Michelle Kavanaugh. “Programs like this one encourage
girls to follow a computer science career path while maintaining their interest
in math and science studies.”
Thank you for your support of tomorrow’s computer experts. Your gift today will Spring It On for STEM learning in Western New York.
