It’s Time to “Tell our Story"

A fundraising campaign for IATI Theater

A New Play Development with All Latinx Artists

IATI Theater selects about five scripts each year to workshop a new play. Each play will undergo a collaborative process, seeking to break the hierarchical method of creating theatre in favor of exploration.

This June, IATI will present Eyes That Don’t See, Corazón Que No Siente, a funny, poignant, and magical play that examines the perseverance of a Cuban-American family after an unexpected life-shattering event. As he explores the journey of coming to terms with his roots as a first generation American, playwright Michael Leon seeks to integrate two wildly different theatrical styles.  Act one of the play draws inspiration from the American kitchen sink drama, except this time with a Latino family at the helm, while Act two pushes reality aside for a more surreal and poetic approach to storytelling.  This ambitious combination is needed in the theater right now as we dig deeper into Latinx stories and present another version to the American family.  Although this story is very specific to its Cuban culture and dialogue, it actively reminds us that we are all more alike than we are different.

This project gives a voice to Latinx artists by putting them in the forefront of all creative departments (acting, directing, writing, producing, etc.) As a result, this creates a platform for a more diverse approach to traditional theatermaking.  In order to take full advantage of this wonderful opportunity, we are seeking financial support.  We would love to compensate the artists for their hard work, as well as covering day to day expenses that will be necessary for the success of the presentation.  With your generosity, our team will be provided with the resources needed in order to deliver a high quality presentation.
