Global Gardens 2018

Empowering refugee growers to grow, market, and eat healthy, spray-free produce.

A fundraising campaign for Jannus, Inc.

Global Gardens is a land-based training program for refugee farmers and gardeners. We provide land to those living in apartment complexes, and entrepreneurial training to those wishing to market their produce. Partners in Boise help us to provide community garden spaces for over 300 families, and we have 11 families in our farmer entrepreneur program. These are the folks you'll see selling a local farmers' markets and providing your Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) shares!

Funds raised through Idaho Gives will provide CSA shares to families experiencing food insecurity in the Treasure Valley.  This year we will partner with the Idaho Hunger Relief Task Force and the Family Medicine Residency of Idaho to provide these shares.  They will identify the families and help us get a weekly box of farm-fresh produce to them.  Global Gardens farmers will produce their vegetables with loving hands, as they do for all CSA members.  Our goal is to raise $900 to provide large shares to two additional families.   Thanks for your contribution!

Sound delicious?  Get your own CSA share at our website.  All Global Gardens produce is spray-free and produced by refugee farmers in Boise.

Meet some of our successful growers!

Safiya Abdi farms in Boise at our incubator farm and on another, city-owned plot. She specialized in beautiful, big, juicy heirloom tomatoes. Safiya has been one of our most successful CSA farmers, with customers coming back every year for her beautiful produce and big smiles.  With her CSA earnings and income from her other job, she was able to purchase a home for her family of 7 in 2017.  Safiya and her husband Mamo will offer a CSA pickup and Pop-Up Produce stand (in partnership with the Capital City Public Market and St. Luke’s Hospital) every Monday at St. Luke's Downtown, beginning in late May.

Abdikadir Chimwaga was the first farmer to break ground at our new incubator farm in Boise. Abdikadir was born in Somalia, but grew up and spent most of his life in Kenya before coming to the United States ten years ago. He met his wife, Sarbah, a native of Burma, in Boise and they married in 2010. Abdikadir brought his impressive farming skills from Kenya where he participated in an organization that trained future farmers on how to grow food in environmentally-friendly ways. He also completed an internship with Abdi Haji, a more experienced farmer in our program, and is now successfully farming on his own.  This is his fourth year running his CSA and Pop-Up Produce Stand at the St. Luke's Hospital in Meridian on Tuesdays.    You can also join his CSA for a Saturday pickup at the Capital City Public Market.  This year he will add a pickup at City Hall West.
