This #GivingTuesday we're raising money for the Lending Library at Racker!
The Autism and Sensory Needs Lending Libraries provide educators, families, and caregivers of people with Autism and other unmet sensory needs an opportunity to learn about and try items before buying them. Racker staff are available to provide information, ideas and support to library user exploring ways to meet the needs of their loved ones by demonstrating and educating people about available tools and equipment.
We currently have a Lending Library in Cortland, Tioga, and Tompkins Counties and we are looking to bolster the options available for families to try out. Often times these items are expensive with a difficult returns process and there isn't an otherwise easy way to try them out.
“My son has always fidgeted uncontrollably and struggled to stay focused and engaged during family time. We borrowed a weighted blanket from the library that he simply kept on his lap and he was able to enjoy an entire T.V. program with the family! We couldn’t believe it worked! As a result, we purchased a few weighted items for him such as a blanket and stuffed animals to use at school, home and out it the community and our time as a family now includes all of our beautiful children. We couldn’t be happier!”
All funds raised during #GivingTuesday will go to purchase new items for individuals, families and care givers to try out. Items we are looking to get range from small items such as fidget toys and stuffed animals; medium sized objects such as cosmic tiles, illumination objects, and textured items; larger items such as lap pads, weighted blankets and light projectors; as well as some of the larger items and packages including tactile wall panels and giant bean bags like the popular Yogibo!
