Give the Gift of Reading to 120 Children Who Are Growing Up in Poverty!

A fundraising campaign for Club Christ

Give the gift of reading to 120 children who are growing up in poverty!

Since opening our doors in 2004, Club Christ has been serving children living in impoverished urban communities by giving them the gift of reading. Today we are serving over 100 children among our three Learning Centers. We JUST opened our third Center in January. The Casa Center is in partnership with Casa de Luz and located near the Stratosphere, in a community known as "Naked City", notorious for gang activity, violence, and prostitution. Our goal in 2018 is to serve 120 children, but we can't do it alone! Can you help Club Christ give the gift of reading to 120 children who are growing up in poverty?

Unfamiliar with Club Christ? It's nice to meet you!

Did you know in Las Vegas, over 100,000 children (nearly 23%) are growing up in poverty? Those 100,000 children in Las Vegas are 7 times more likely to dropout of high school, and abuse drugs and alcohol. Perhaps the most alarming statistic is that these children are much more likely to be incarcerated by the age of 24 than they are to ever graduate college; only continuing the cycle of poverty in their families.

What's the Problem?

  • Educationschools lack resources and/or skilled educators, parents are not equipped to provide the educational support at home that their children need.
  • Spiritualitylack of churches engaging and shepherding the community and its families.
  • Mentorship- children growing up in single-parent homes, where the parent is often overworked and underpaid; lack of positive role models and professional network of adults; wrong peer groups easily influence children who are seeking love and acceptance.

What's Our Solution?

Our after-school Learning Centers are in the middle of the most at-risk and underserved communities in Las Vegas. Yes, you heard us correctly, literally in the MIDDLE of these communities, we work to help children break the cycle of poverty. What are our methods?

  • Literacy and Tutoring Support- Each student spends an hour every day with a volunteer leader working on various personalized literacy activities and homework in a small group setting. Our online literacy programs (Ticket to Read and Reading Eggs) are part of our most struggling readers and then continue to strengthen those reading skills.
  • Bible Studies- Together we study God's word in weekly Bible Studies designed for each age group: K-3rd grade, 4-6th grade, and 7-12th grade. We pray for our students, send them to summer camps, and often get them plugged into local churches.
  • Mentorship- Students are connected with mentors who can walk alongside them in life, who listen and speak truth, and who provide support and guidance.

At Club Christ, we believe where a child is born should not determine their future and we won't let the cycle of poverty get in the way of God's plan for the lives of the children we serve. We desire to see our mission fulfilled: urban youth are empowered to transform their communities for Christ!
