First Moments: A Birth & Breastfeeding Seminar

Join us for a professional seminar on birth & breastfeeding featuring Dr. Mark Sloan, author of Birth Day and a community panel!

A fundraising event for Baby Café Bakersfield

Event Information

Please join us on Saturday, October 27 at the Bakersfield Racquet Club for a full-day, professional seminar entitled "First Moments: A Birth & Breastfeeding Seminar."  This event features author and Santa Rosa physician Dr. Mark Sloan (Birth Day) as well as a community panel of experts in obstetric nursing and lactation care.

We invite you to join us in this historic, beautiful downtown Bakersfield setting for this special event, sponsored by Central Valley Lactation Association.  The event begins at 9a.m., lunch will be served, and we will conclude by 4:30 p.m. Continuing education units co-sponsored by BreastfeedLA.

Dr. Sloan's presentations include:

How Did We End Up Giving Birth Like This? The Evolution of Human Childbirth - a look at the maternal and fetal skeletal, hormonal, and behavioral changes over time that have resulted in modern childbirth

Pain & Politics: A Brief History of Labor Pain Management - a history of how ancient pain relief methods, technology, and even the feminist movement impacted how birth happens today

The First Five Minutes - understanding fetal circulation, fetal circulatory changes around birth, and fetal sensory capabilities in a way that informs our understanding of normal newborn behavior

Proactive Early Feeding of the Newborn - understanding how to optimize early feeding even if the labor and birth process were challenging or suboptimal for parent and/or infant - presented by Adrienne Guirguis, IBCLC, RLC, CCE

Following the presentations, we are proud to present a Community Panel to discuss some of the local history of birth and breastfeeding.  The panel will be led by Mary Stanley, RN, IBCLC, who has over 50 years of experience in obstetric nursing and now practices lactation consultation.  Mary brought the childbirth education style known as Lamaze to Kern County and was part of the highly-regarded free-standing Birth Center that operated in the 1980s.

This event is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to hear from a down-to-earth, California-based physician who has written a popular book on the history of birth as well as those who hold the history of local birth and breastfeeding support.  We're working to lift these voices, to preserve the history, to learn together, and to move forward toward optimal birth and breastfeeding experiences for infants and their parents.  We hope you will join us!
