After School Programs for Kids who are Homeless

Empowering Lives Through Education

A fundraising campaign for Chicago HOPES for Kids

The mission of Chicago HOPES for Kids is to provide educational support for children living in Chicago's homeless shelters.  It is our mission to provide children with the resources and encouragement needed to succeed academically despite the challenges of homelessness.  The vision is to break the cycle of homelessness that threatens our children's futures, because we believe if you can read, you can do anything.

This Giving Tuesday we are raising funds to reach more emergent readers in 2019 with critical literacy tools, assessment and inspiration to help them become proficient readers and engaged students despite facing homelessness. We are focusing on this group because we know that 80% of third graders reading above grade level will graduate high school.  There are five aspects to the process of reading: phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, reading comprehension and fluency.   At HOPES, we use an assessment system to determine where our students need support, and engage trained volunteers to work one-on-one with students to help address any deficiencies and encourage a lifelong love of reading.

Our program has shown results, over 85% of students in our program maintain or improve their reading by at least one level each semester they are in our program.

If we reach our goal of raising $10,000 this Giving Tuesday, we will invest in literacy tools that will engage and inspire young readers - from interactive games and technology to simplified reading books as well as investment in volunteer recruitment and training.   With your help, we will reach more emergent readers in 2019 with literacy support needed to help them succeed at school and take pride in their academic achievement.

It is not just about providing books, it is about providing the right books, curriculum and resources to help support this vulnerable population.  Please help us provide these resources to our students by donating on Giving Tuesday!
