One of the goals of group home living is to increase the independence of residents. Group home staff members teach residents daily living and self-care skills, providing as little assistance as possible. Daily living skills include meal preparation, laundry, housecleaning, money management, and helping with social interactions.
St. Coletta’s of Illinois aims to provide a stimulating experience of healthy and recreational community living services to adults with developmental disabilities. Residents participate in a wide range of programs in settings that support their individual needs. Highly-trained caring staff provide assistance with daily routines, community integration, and behavioral therapies. Group homes provide a safe, loving and encouraging environment where residents can learn to live independently and develop a sense of self. Without a group home setting, many adults with developmental disabilities do not get the training and guidance needed to become an integrated part of society and have no sense of true self.
Ernie's Story: Ernie has been a part of the St. Coletta's family for 26 years. With no family to care for him, he became a resident in one of our group homes. Ernie came to St. Coletta's as a shy individual and was unsure of himself or his place in the world. He didn't know what he was capable of. Over the years, as Ernie went through job training and assessment programs provided by St. Coletta's, he has been successful in finding and maintaining employment and has gained confidence in himself and his abilities. Without the loving, and stable group-home environment, Ernie has learned basic living skills and as well as how to make friends and build relationships.
