The Martin County Police Athletic League was created with a goal of helping our local youth through a program dedicated to sportsmanship, friendly competition, and fitness. We would like to introduce you to our program and the numerous benefits that it holds, both for the children it will serve and for the community.
The Police
Athletic League is a national movement that was originally developed more than
seventy (70) years ago to prevent juvenile crime and provide an alternative to
drugs and violence through sports and mentoring activities. As the program
evolved and local chapters were formed throughout the country it became a significant
vehicle for fostering a cooperative and constructive relationship between the
law enforcement community and the citizens that they serve. However, at its core the
vision of the
Police Athletic League is simple: pairing good cops with good kids to make a
positive difference for their future. The Martin County PAL serves a broad
brushed youth population many of whom live in single parent families and many
of whose socioeconomic status is at, or below, poverty level with the head of
household being female. When entering Martin County PAL, these youth, who often
have anger issues with no outlet for their aggression and little positive male
influence learn camaraderie, teamwork, and empowerment. They also experience a
much more positive relationship with law enforcement, seeing them more as mentors,
instructors, coaches. Martin County PAL saves lives; and this fledgling chapter
would benefit from funding, so we can continue the work we’ve begun with this
most deserving population.
