The Ozark Literacy Council is Arkansas' leading provider of literacy training. With the addition of Financial, Health, Workforce and Civic Literacy training as part of our mission, we incorporate a one on one tutor program and classroom training to integrate our five literacy components into a comprehensive education using the Northwest Arkansas community as our laboratory. Partnerships with the Fayetteville Public Library, Springdale Public Library and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art are combined with teaching concepts using the natural and cultural opportunities in the community, county and region to ensure all OLC students learn to read as well as how to function as vital citizens of Northwest Arkansas.
Volunteer tutors, who help keep our per student cost at the lowest in the state, receive an in-depth training course, are matched with students based on a number of factors including personal traits and interests and are monitored regularly to ensure productive interactions throughout our four level educational program.
OLC has provided literacy training for over 50 years. With the launch of a comprehensive development program, county needs assessment and the expansion of its satellite site programs, OLC is poised to expand its proven programs and services to reduce the 13% adult literacy deficiency rate in Washington County. (This rate is defined as adults with a third grade level or lower reading comprehension.)
Your support will allow us not only to continue to address this critical socieoeconomic problem in Washington County but to also grow our outreach to smaller communities beyond Fayetteville and Springdale. We hope you will support our efforts and join us in bringing the gift of reading to our friends and neighbors in need.
