Canisius Baseball

A fundraising campaign for Canisius University

Support Canisius Baseball!

The Canisius baseball team continued its sustained excellence into the 2019 season, as the Golden Griffins battled their way to secure the MAAC Regular-Season Championship, advancing to the MAAC Tournament for a conference-leading 13th-straight year.

Named the preseason favorites to win the conference, the Griffs were led to their regular-season title by MAAC Coach of the Year Matt Mazurek, as the Blue and Gold have now won at least one major conference award in each of the past 14 seasons. For the second-straight season, Canisius saw four players earn All-MAAC honors, as pitcher Andrew Sipowicz, shortstop Conner Morro, third baseman Stephen Bennett and outfielder Mark McKenna were named to the All-MAAC Second Team. Additionally, freshman Andrew Fron was selected to the inaugural MAAC All-Rookie Team after a breakout second half. Sipowicz received another major accolade after the season, as the graduated senior became just the fourth baseball player in school history to be named the Canisius Male Athlete of the Year, joining J.P. Stevenson, Kevin Mailoux and Mazurek.

Mazurek enters his third season as the head coach of the Golden Griffin baseball team and 15th overall with the program. Through his first two seasons, the Western New York native has led the Griffs to the 2018 MAAC Championship, a 2018 NCAA Tournament appearance and the 2019 MAAC regular-season title. The 2006 Canisius Male Athlete of the Year and a two-time All-MAAC First Team selection, Mazurek was inducted into the Canisius Sports Hall of Fame in January 2019 for his historic playing career on Main Street.
