Butterfly Athletic Park

Butterfly Athletic Park is being built in memory of Katie Durkin at Wales Primary School

A fundraising campaign for The Butterfly Foundation

Our efforts honor Katie Durkin, (9), who was returning home from summer day camp July 7, 2015, when her life ended tragically by a head-on collision.

Katie’s parents made a decision that day. They agreed to only look forward.

They immediately began brainstorming with friends about a program that would honor Katie’s short but beautiful life in ways that would positively sustain her legacy for years to come. A concept emerged surrounding her friends’ description of “Katie” as being “Kind And Thoughtful In Everything.” That acronym was augmented by Katie’s recent hand-drawn artwork of a butterfly. Combined, the two elements serve as a tender yet powerful inspirational symbol for Katie’s life and legacy.

The Butterfly Foundation, in collaboration with Wales Primary's PTO are building Butterfly Athletic Park to honor and remember Katie! The park will include a U10 soccer field, three-lane running track, basketball court, and a new playground with a design for youth with special needs. Park construction is underway, and there is a community build day for the playground on April 30th.
