Bring ART into your Heart!

A fundraising campaign for Edward Hopper House

Edward Hopper, Yachting Scene, ca. 1905, Watercolor, Collection of Steve Oifer

Edward Hopper was born on July 22, 1882, in Nyack, New York, a small shipbuilding community on the Hudson River.   In celebration of his love of the Hudson River we are launching this campaign through Hudson Valley Gives with a fundraising goal of $1882.   Your generous support will help underwrite a new exhibition called Hopper’s Hudson.

Did you know that before deciding to pursue his future in fine art, Hopper imagined a career as a nautical architect?  Among his earliest signed works is an 1895 oil painting of a rowboat.

The Hudson River played an important role in Edward Hopper’s artistic development.  Growing up in Nyack, NY, he had a view of the river from his bedroom window and he spent many hours at the village docks and shipyards, sketching and watching the building and rigging of boats.  As a result of his love of the river and boats, waterscapes were a common subject in his art throughout his career.

Your support from this campaign will underwrite the exhibition Hopper’s Hudson, curated by Mark Waller, that will document the work of renowned artists who depicted the Hudson River during Edward Hopper’s lifetime (1882-1967) and reveals the change in artistic sensibilities and the evolving riverscape during those years.

Among the artists included in this exhibition are Reynolds Beal, Joseph Biel, J.O. Davidson, A.B. Davies, C.K. Chatterton, William Fisher, Biskram Hartman, John Henry Hill, and Hal Robinson.

Edward Hopper’s story and displays of his work continue in the Sanborn Gallery tying his art, artists of the time, and the awesome Hudson River together.

So tickle your inner art and bring ART in your HEART as we celebrate our campaign on Hudson Valley Give Day.   Please give on May 18!
