The Family Room at Beverly J. Martin Elementary is a place for students, teachers, families, and caregivers to come together to support our scholars. The space is used daily for meetings, organizing, and for families to just sit & chat. There are shelves of free books & clothing for families, and coffee for teachers & parents.
We would like to upgrade this nice space to be a GREAT space that better meets the needs of the BJM Community.
On our wish list:
- A compact (yet roomy!) refrigerator to hold fresh healthy snacks (baby carrots, hummus, fruits & veggies, cheese, etc.) for classrooms to use (Did you know that a majority of teachers at BJM spend money out of their own pockets to feed the students in their classroom?)
- A new coffee pot (The current coffee pot's handle is broken, causing burning hot liquid to spill all over anyone who tries to pour themselves some coffee -- Yowch!)
- An upgraded whiteboard for meetings & brainstorming sessions (The current whiteboard is not attached to the wall so it is rarely used)
- Totes to store warm clothes for children who need them (Many teachers say that they are not able to go outside for winter recess because children in their class do not have warm gear)
- Storage cabinet for BJM Families Together stuff (We would love to have all paper products and additional school supplies available where we have easy access - right now they are behind two locked doors that require a staff person for us to get in!)
- Lost & Found storage (The Lost & Found is located down near the cafeteria, but families are not allowed to walk down there for security reasons. Bringing the Lost & Found to the Family Room would allow families to find more lost items!)
- If we get a little extra funding: A fresh coat of paint on the walls, upgraded seating, a few nice plants, and more.
Our Family Room has a LOT of potential, and -- to be honest -- we need it to be much more functional. Our teachers and students need classroom support in the form of healthy snacks, access to warm winter gear, additional supplies, and easy access to the things they need.
