Athena is a chestnut Thoroughbred mare, born on May 26, 2012. She came to live at Lucky Orphans Horse Rescue in the summer of 2022, after retiring from being a broodmare. Athena is super sweet, and very smart. She has a sense of sadness about her, that we completely understand due to how she arrived at Lucky Orphans.

Athena raced in 2016, and 2017. She only ran 4 races, and came in first twice during 2016. She was then retired to be a brood mare. Her sire is Ghostzapper. Ghostzapper won the breeders cup classic and horse of the year in 2004. He's noted for being a good broodmare sire, and one of his daughters, Stage Magic, produced triple crown winner (2018) Justify. Sadly, in March 2022, Woodville coliced and needed surgery. While the surgery was successful, she lost her foal two days later and couldn't be bred anymore.

We renamed Woodville Athena, after the Greek Goddess. After her loss, she needed a new start and a new name with positive attributes. She is happily settled into the farm and has even been ridden!
